Grow up vs. Bring up

 Grow up or Bring up

We confuse many times using these two phrasal verbs. They become more confusing  when we use them in relation to child development or nurturing. Let's see the difference between them.




    Grow up 

    Grow up means to develop into an adult. A child grows up and become an adult.

    Grow up is also used to mean mature that one stop behaving in a childish way.

    • You should grow up, and start earning some money.
    • She told me what Hari was like when he was growing up.
    • John and I grew up there, right on the borderline.
    • Amma grew up in an orphanage and had been getting too old to stay there much longer.


    Bring up

    Bring up means to nurture a child and to take of a child until they grown up.

    Bring up has many other meanings as well.  Here we are discussing the meaning in relation with children.

    • My parents bring up my kids very well.
    • The old lady have brought up these puppies.


    Difference between grow up and bring up.

    We differentiate between these phrasal verbs on the basis of children

    Grow up means development of a child into an adult. We usually use the grow up only until a child become an adult. After that we use grown up instead of grow up.


    Bring up means to take care of a baby by nurturing well. Adult bring up a bay by teaching, educating, nurturing and doing all other necessary activities that need a baby. 

    Parents bring up a baby and a baby grows up to an adult.

    Raise can also be used in place of bring up.
