 Burn, Brand, Cauterize, Char, Scald, Scorch, Sear, Singe

These words all relate to the application of heat or fire, but they differ in intensity, method, and purpose. Let's see them one by one.






    Burn

    Burn is general term for damage caused by fire, heat, or any types of chemicals reaction.

    • My hand gets burned while making food.
    • The house burned down in the fire.


    Brand

    As a verb, brand means to burn a mark usually a symbol or letter onto a surface of living or non-living things, often for identification. Cattle owners brand their animal by putting a mark on the skin to show who owns it.

    • Farmers should brand their cattle.
    • The rancher branded his cattle with a hot iron.



    Cauterize

    It means to burn a wound, using a chemical or heat, in order to stop the loss of blood or to prevent infection.

    • The wound needs to be cauterized.
    • The doctor cauterized the wound to stop the bleeding and infection.


    Char

    Char means to partially burn something, like wood, turning it black without complete destruction. In short, char means to burn or cook something until it turns black. We char wood to turn it charcoal.

    • Our thousands of trees were charred in the fire.
    • The bodies were charred beyond recognition.



    Scald

    Scald means to burn yourself, someone or something with very hot liquid or steam. Cook scald chicken to wash it properly and thoroughly. Scald tomato to peel it.

    • She scalded her hand with hot water vapors.
    • Chicken is scalded with boiling water.
    • She scalded her tongue on the hot tea.


    Scorch

    Scorch something means to burn it slightly and superficially that it changes its color. Only the surface is affected, not deep or fully destroyed. The flames scorched the green grass into brown.


    • The sun scorched the grass during the drought.
    • The iron scorched the shirt, leaving a brown mark.



    Sear

    Sear means to burn the surface of something quickly at a high temperature. Searing involves subjecting a surface to intense heat for a very short time. We sear meat to retain its juices.

    • The tree was seared by lightning.
    •  The flames seared my skin.


    Singe

    Singe means to burn the surface of something slightly, often removing hair or fuzz.

    • They flame singed his hair.
    • Her hair  was singed by electric fire.


    Difference between burn, brand, cauterize, char, scald, scorch, sear, singe.


    Burn is used for general damage by heat. Its intensity goes from mild to severe. It can be used for any contexts, like injuries, fires, damages, etc.


    Brand is used for intentional marking by heat or burning onto  surface of living or non-living things. It is controlled action. It is commonly used for livestock.


    Cauterize is used for medical burning to seal wounds. It is generally used in surgery or wounds. It means to control use of heat onto a wound to stop bleeding and prevent any infections.


    Char is used for blacken something by heat without full burning. It is used on surface level only. Char is used generally for food and wood.


    Scald is used to mean to burn something with hot liquid. We scald a tomato in boiling water so that peeling would become easy. One could scald oneself if one bath in hot water. The word generally used in cooking.


    Scorch is used to burn something to the point of discoloration, usually by hot metal. We sometimes scorch dress by the setting the iron to high for the fabric. It is an accidental act that brings damages to the object.


    Sear is used to mean to burn a surface to intense heat for a very short time. This may have the effect  of hardening, sealing, drying up, or destroying tissue. The word is mostly used for cooking or injuries contexts. Searing is an intentional act that makes the food flavorful.


    To singe is to burn the surface of something lightly. The fire singed his eyebrows. Singeing is sometimes done deliberately. A cook may singe a plucked chicken to remove pinfeathers.


    Sear, brand, and cauterize all connotate deliberate burning to achieve a definite purpose.
