Difference between Bequest, Devise, and Legacy

These words are not exactly synonymous. The word bequest, devise, and legacy all mean gift left in a will, however they have specific distinctions. Let's see what those distinctions are.

    Bequest

    A bequest is money or property which you legally leave to someone when you die.

    • The hospital has received a generous bequest from a local businessman.
    • His father left a bequest to each of his sons.


    Devise

    It means  a gift of real property that is land or immovable assets given through a will.

    As a noun it means a gift of real property by will.

    As a verb, it means giving real property through will.

    • Ambani devised his building to his only son.
    • The farmland's devise sparked an heir dispute.



    Legacy

    A legacy is money or property which someone leaves to you when they die.

    • He left her a legacy of a million dollars.
    • Such attitudes are a legacy from colonial times.


    Difference between bequest, devise, and legacy.


    Bequest is used to mean any type of personal property given through a will. It may be cash, jewelry, share, land or any other property.


    Devise is used to mean a gift of real property ,specially land, given through a will. In modern usage, it is used for any property but it should be used for real property only.(land, house, building, etc.)


    Legacy is used to mean any kind of personal property. However, it is basically refer money or any other financial assets.


    Extra Note:

    Bequest, and legacy are used interchangeably.

    Devise remains more strictly tied to real estate.

    Bequest is used for any kind of personal property.

    Devise should strictly used for land or building.

    Legacy is used for money or any other financial properties.
