Idol, Idle, Idyll, Ideal

These words sound very similar that may confuse us. It seems that they are synonyms but they are not. Let's know about these words.





    Idol

    Idol is an object or image which is worshipped as a god. It can be a person who is greatly admired or respected.

    • My mother is my biggest idol.
    • Many idols was destroyed by Muslim kings in India.


    Idle

    Idle means lazy not active; not employed, not working, inactive.

    • The land was left idle for years.
    • Many graduates are idle.
    • An idle student don't get good marks in exams.


    Idyll

    Idyll  is a happy and peaceful place, event or experience that lasts for short period of time.

    It also mean a short poem or the piece of writing that describes a peaceful and happy scene.

    • No summer idyll like we used to have.
    • They do not belong in the wintry idyll of the Upper Midwest.


    Ideal

    Ideal means a person or thing that seems perfect or excellent.

    • An idea or standard of perfection or excellence.
    • He considers his father his ideal.
