Antagonist vs. Opponent
Antagonist and opponent seems to be synonyms but there is minute differences between them. We should use these words very carefully in our writing.
Antagonist
Antagonist is someone who is against somebody or something.
- The children appeared before her like antagonists who had overcome her.
- What strength had I to dart retaliation at my antagonist?
Opponent
Opponent is someone who opposes something or somebody. An opponent can be a person that you are playing or fighting against in a game, competition, argument, etc.
- He failed to stop his opponents from ripping apart most of the bags containing anti- North Korean leaflets.
- It was a personal opponent and one he could lick.
What is the difference between antagonist and opponent ?
An opponent is one who is on the opposite side; a politician's opponents are other politicians who are in different party and different aims or policies. In sport, your opponent is the person who is playing against you.
Opponent doesn't connote personal hate for other.
It means to be just on the opposite side without any personal grudge.
Antagonist connotes personal opposition in any field whether it is sport, politic, battle, war, or anything else. It shows unfriendly nature towards other on any personal bad experience. Whereas opponent opposes other with friendly nature.
An antagonist is always in opposition, but an opponent is not always in opposition sometimes they are agree with other opinions.
Opponent is soft word and Antagonist is harder and stronger.
