Persuade vs. Convince

 Persuade and convince. 

The two words that are often used interchangeably, but have a distinct difference in meaning.

These words both refer to when a person influences another person to do or believe something.

Persuade vs. convince, persuade, convince




    Persuade

    Persuade means to make somebody to do something by giving them good reasons for doing it.

    • She persuaded me to go to the party, even though I was tired.
    • The advertisement persuades viewers to buy the product.


    Convince

    Convince means to make somebody or yourself believe that something is true.

    • He convinced me that climate change is a serious threat.
    • The lawyer presented evidence to convince the jury of her client's innocence.



    Difference between Persuade and Convince:-

    Persuade means to cause someone to do something by asking, arguing, or giving reasons.

    If you persuade someone to do something, your cause them to do it by giving them good reasons for doing it.

    • He persuaded his friend to go back to home.
    • Police persuaded robbers to surrender.


    Convince means to cause someone to believe that something is true.

    If someone or something convinces you of something, they make you believe that it is true or that it exists.

    • He convinced me that the story was true.


    Persuade is used to influencing someone to take action.

    We convince someone that something is true.


    Convince is used to change someone's mind, belief, facts, or opinion.

    Persuade is used to influence someone's behavior, actions, or decisions.


    If someone or something convinces you to do something, they persuade you to do it.


    Mnemonic:

    Convince has vin (win) inside. We know that convince means to overcome in argument, in other words to win in argument.

    Per means through, to completion, and suadere means advice. 

    In short, according to root words persuade means perfect advice. And only perfect advice can persuade someone to do something.


    In a nutshell

    To persuade is to get someone to do something.

    To convince is to get someone to believe or agree with something.
