Hoard vs. Horde

 The words hoard and horde not only sound alike but look very similar also. However they have entirely different meaning.




    Hoard

    As a noun: A large amount of something valuable that  is kept hidden

    • Police found a hoard of silver and gold.

    As a verb:  To collect and hide a large amount of something valuable.

    • In war, people would start to hoard food and money.


    Horde

    Horde is a noun. It means a large crowd of people.

    Hordes of reporters were shouting questions.


    Difference between hoard and horde.

    Hoard

    If you hoard things such as food, money or any other expensive things, you save or store them , often in secret place because they are valuable or important to you. In short, hoard means to collect and store important and valuable things.


    Horde

    Horde mean a crowd of large people who are excited, unruly and often, rather frightening or unpleasant.


    Memory trick:

     Hoard has " a ". We will relate a with amass, accumulate, gather. Hoard means to gather or collect something.


    Horde has "e". We will relate e with people. Horde means large number of people.


    Hoard (A) = Amass, Accumulate

    Horde (E) = Everyone, People


    In a nutshell

    Hoard with a means to accumulate something

    Horde with e means wild people.
