 They are often confused because they sound similar and are related to governance. However, they refer to very different meaning.

    Policy

    A policy is a set of guidelines or a plan that a group, like a business or political party, decides to follow.

    • The company has adopted a firm policy of shoplifting.
    • We have tried to pursue a policy of neutrality.



    Polity

    A polity is an organized society, like a country or a city, that has its own government and system for managing itself.

    • The Roman Empire was a vast and complex polity that struggled to govern its extensive territories.
    • Ancient Athens is often studied as the first democratic polity.



    What is the difference between policy and polity?


    Policy is a set of ideas, plans and rules that guide actions and decisions. It is like action plan that tells about what  and the how, what we are going to do, or what the rule is. It is mostly used in business, government, insurance and personal conduct.

    • You should check your insurance policy to see what is covered.
    • It's my policy to always be honest with my clients.


    A polity is a defined social group, such as a nation or city, together with its governing body.  It's about the people and the system.

    • For any polity to survive, it must have the consent and participation of its people.

    Policy sounds like "police" who enforce rules. Policies are the rules.


    Polity contains "city," which is a type of organized community. A polity is the organized community itself.
